We have recently completed several Healthy School Streets in the London Borough of Camden.
A school street is a road outside a school that has a temporary restriction on motorised traffic at the start and the end of the school day. The restriction applies to both school traffic and through traffic between 8:15am and 9:30am and 3-4pm.
Many schools suffer from air quality issues, congestion problems, cars illegally parked and high noise pollution levels. School Streets were introduced to address these issues. The aims of the Healthy School Streets are to[1]:
Improve air quality around schools
Discourage journeys being made to schools by cars
Reduce the amount of traffic outside schools
Make the streets outside schools safer for children and parents at the start and end of the school day
In 2017, Camden was the first council in London to introduce Healthy School Streets.[2] To date, there are 8 Permanent School Street Schemes and 11 Trial Healthy School Street schemes[3] in Camden.
We have installed planters outside Primrose Hill Primary School on Princess Road and on Croftdown Road outside Brookfield Primary School in.
Healthy School Streets are a great way of addressing poor air quality and congestion as well as encouraging walking and cycling. Meristem is looking forward to the next phase of the Healthy School Street Schemes.
